Aero road bikes are designed for pure all-out speed, to help achieve this the tubes are carefully shaped to reduce drag. Intensive R&D and vigorous testing in the wind tunnel and real-world riding conditions results in the shape of each tube being carefully shaped to minimise drag. Instead of the more usual round or ovalised tubes to be found on most road bikes an aero road bike will instead have tubes with an aerofoil or truncated aerofoil profile. These tube profiles are more efficient at carving through the air resulting in more speed and less wasted energy.
