Frequently Asked
Questions
Should I choose a CGR AL e or Gravel AL e bike?

If you're torn between the two models and are unsure about which would fulfill your cycling needs best, why not check out our CGR vs Gravel blog. In which we outline the key differences between the all-road capabilities of the CGR and off-road specific Gravel range.

How do I select the power assist level?

There is an easy to use button on the top tube that enables you to set the level of assist that you require and which also displays the battery charge remaining.

How will I know how much battery I have left?

The button mounted on the top-tube indicates the remaining battery life at a glance using a simple colour-code. White= 75% capacity or more remaining, Green= 50-75%, Orange= 25-50%, Red= 15-25%, Slow Red Flash= 10-15% and Rapid Red Flash= 10% or less remaining. You can also keep track of the remaining battery life using the MAHLE SmartBike Systems companion app.

Do I need to pedal to ride this e-bike?

Yes, our e-bikes are pedal assisted models which require rider input at all times.

I’m worried that I won’t have full control over the bike?

There’s no need to worry, being a pedal assisted model means you are in full control at all times. When a power assist level is selected the motor simply provides a little extra boost whilst you pedal and does not take over.

Do I need tax, insurance or a licence to ride the e-bikes?

No, pedal assisted electric bikes do not require you to hold a valid driver’s licence, pay any form of road tax or take out insurance.

Can I ride this in the wet?

The electric components used on our e-bikes are IP54 rated. They are protected against splashing, but not against full immersion. The electric bike should never be subjected to pressurised water from a hose pipe or jet wash, failure to adhere to this may result in damage to the electrical components that comprise the motor system . When transporting the bike on the outside of a vehicle a waterproof cover should be used to ensure the protection of the electronic components from water ingress during transportation.

Can this bike be purchased on a cycle to work scheme?

Yes, all e-bikes can be purchased through all the major cycle to work scheme providers. The government have even removed the £1000 limit making obtaining an e-bike on cycle to work more beneficial than ever.

How do I charge the battery?

To charge the battery you simply plug the bike into a household socket using the supplied charger and cable. (The optional range extender can also charge the main battery whilst you are on the move).

Is it possible to test ride the bike?

Due to the challenges associated with the Covid pandemic, test rides are not currently available. We hope to be able to offer these soon. Alternatively, you can hire the e-bike from E-Venture Bikes in Keswick, the rental cost will then be deducted from your purchase should you decide to buy one of our e-bikes. We also hope to be able to reinstate the Ribble roadshows which travel around the UK offering people the opportunity to test ride our bikes. We will update the events page of our website and share the details via our social channels once we have any events confirmed.

How fast can I go on the CGR AL e?

The MAHLE SmartBike Systems X35+ power assist system offers assistance up to 15mph, at which point (by law, as with all e bikes in the UK) the assistance cuts out. If you drop back below 15mph then they system will re-engage until such time as you turn the assistance off.

What range can I expect from the bike?

The battery range of the CGR AL e depends on a number of factors including rider weight, route profile and temperature. A rider of 90kg, on a varied route including climbs, descents and flats can expect an approximate range of 60 miles. An optional range extender is also available for all of our e-bikes, which gives a total capacity of 456Wh and adds an extra 70% of effective range.

Will my pannier rack fit?

The CGR AL e has discreet pannier rack mounts built into the frame.

What size tyres can be fitted?

There is clearance for tyres up to 45mm in width on 700c wheels and 47mm on 650b without mudguards, or 40mm with guards fitted.

What type of axles does the CGR AL e have?

The MAHLE SmartBike System uses a bolt-on style dropout at the rear, the front is a standard 12x100mm bolt thru-axle.

Is the bike supplied with pedals?

No, we do not supply pedals with this bike, a selection of pedals are available to order with the bike.

How heavy is the bike?

With SRAM Apex 1x and in a size Medium it weighs in at approx 13.5kgs making it one of the lightest e bike ranges in the world. We also make the lightest e road bikes in the world.

Can the battery be removed?

Yes, the battery can easily be accessed through the bottom bracket by any MAHLE certified technician. The press fit bottom bracket has to be removed first to facilitate this removal.

What is the life expectancy of the battery?

Like any battery, the capacity will start to degrade over time, in the case of the Panasonic battery, after approximately 500 charging cycles. Please take some time to read our battery care blog in which we outline the best practices to ensure that your e-bike's battery continues to function at optimal efficiency throughout its lifetime.

What if I get a puncture?

Simply disconnect the cable to the rear wheel motor by unclipping the connector on the chainstay. Then, using an 8mm allen key to loosen the nuts on the rear axle, then reverse the process when the puncture has been repaired.

What's the warranty of the bike?

The frame has a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. All other parts are covered by the manufacturer's standard warranty. The Ebikemotion system is covered against manufacturing defects for a period of 2-years.

Brilliant Bike
I ordered my GRL Al e on December 3rd with a predicted delivery date of June 20th! I collected the bike on June 29th so not bad considering the lockdown problems and shortage of parts etc. I was in touch with your customer service throughout who kept me updated me extremely well.
Due to a hip replacement I had back in March I was told not to ride for at least four months so had to use the bike on my trainer for a couple of weeks just to get a feel for it and also sort the gearing out as it wasn’t indexed correctly which was no problem.

So my first ride on the bike was last week July 17th. Compared to my previous bike a Ribble HF 83 which I bought back in 2015 it was obviously a lot heavier and took a little time to get familiar with the weight but after a few miles got the feel and also the e assist which was brilliant. I was quite sparing with the power on that ride and used it very successfully on some steep climbs one of which was my real nemesis and turned out to be a real breeze! The ride feel was quite stiff compared to my HF83 but all in all extremely pleased with the bike. I’m not sure I will need the “Range Extender” as the rides I’m doing aren’t much more tha 50 miles, my first ride was 30 with battery at 65% at end, yesterday July 17th I did another 30 but gave it more power as I was riding with someone else who pushed me a bit more and battery was at 52% at finish. At age 73 I really appreciate the e assist and now don’t worry about climbs anymore. My days of fast riding are well in the past so now consider myself a tourer.

A G Barclay
When I retired 8 years ago I bought a cyclocross bike as I was to heavy for a road bike. After cycling an average of 180km per week all year round I am 38kg lighter and the cyclocross bike is worn out, so a replacement was researched thoroughly.
As I am fast approaching my 70s I wanted to future proof my purchase so opted for a CGR AL e with additional mudguards, Brooke’s Cambium saddle and Shimano flat pedals.
After the first 1000km I am very pleased with my purchase.
With the battery off I have found that I complete my regular 38km circuit with the same average speed of 21 to 22km per hour as on my old bike, presumably the better gearing compensates for the weight of the battery etc.
When I switch the battery on I feel morally obliged to try to keep my speed above 25km per hour to avoid engine assistance, but when I turn a corner into a fierce headwind I must admit that the assistance feels very welcome.
Where I cycle is fairly flat so hills have never been much of an issue, but when I go to Scotland on holiday I will happily take advantage of the electric assistance.
I would also strongly recommend the Brooke’s saddle which I find far more comfortable than the gel saddles I have had in the past, and the Shimano flat pedals are totally non slip and I think safer for an old bloke.
At this time I am totally content with my Ribble bike.
